From birth, I, as most in this country have been coddled with first-world luxuries and naïveté. My perception of beauty and appeal has been based on the barrage of images that advertisers and Hollywood have bombard us with on a daily basis. This collection is contrary to that social norm.
Khayelitsha and Dunoon are townships in the Western Cape of South Africa. They are destitute places to try and survive in, and yet I found myself incredibly attracted to them. After photographing and talking with the residents, I realized that my attraction was to the simplicity of it all. There is nothing fake there. Their perception of beauty is real. Everywhere you look there is a welcoming face, intense color, and pride, and texture...lots of texture!
My time there was personal and I have very strong emotions about the experience. This collection is an extension of that experience. Some may see it as a pursuit to help show these living conditions and illustrate the help that is needed. That is fine. However, I hope viewers will take my art for what I intend it to be; a different type of beauty...
